Choosing Between Beijing Capital and Beijing Daxing Airports

PEK or PKX? What each Beijing airport costs you in time, money, and logistical friction depending on where you are staying.

The Single Fact You Need Right Now

For most travellers staying in central Beijing, Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) costs less overall than Beijing Daxing (PKX). Even if Daxing has a flashier train. The flight price difference is negligible. The real gap comes from the final taxi ride from the station to your hotel. Daxing's Airport Express drops you at Caoqiao, a 20-minute trip for ¥35. From Caoqiao, a taxi to Dongcheng runs another ¥50-80. Capital's Airport Express reaches Dongzhimen in 25 minutes for ¥25. A taxi from Dongzhimen to most Dongcheng hotels costs ¥15-30. That is a net saving of ¥25-55 and at least 15 minutes of your afternoon.

When Daxing Actually Wins

Choose Daxing For the South or Far West

Daxing makes sense if your hotel is in Fengtai, the far south, or near Caoqiao metro station on Line 10 or the Daxing line. If you are staying near the Summer Palace in Haidian or the Western Hills in Shijingshan, Daxing adds 30-45 minutes of metro time you do not need. The Daxing Airport Express runs every 8-10 minutes from 06:00 to 22:30 and uses dedicated tracks. No traffic, no delays. The train itself is modern, has luggage racks, and charges your phone.

Skip Daxing For Dongcheng After Dark

But the taxi from Daxing to Dongcheng costs ¥200 minimum and takes 60+ minutes in moderate traffic. At night, after the metro stops at 22:30-23:00, that taxi bill jumps to ¥250-300 and the drive stretches past 80 minutes. At 1am, no metro runs. You pay the ¥250+ or wait for the 06:00 first train.

The Door to Door Calculation You Must Do

Run the Numbers Before You Book

Here is the failure case that trips most travellers. You book a flight into Daxing because it is ¥80 cheaper than PEK, then spend ¥200 on a taxi to your hotel near the Forbidden City. Door to door, you paid more and lost 90 minutes. The PEK flight cost more up front, plus a ¥35 metro and ¥20 taxi, and you were in your hotel lobby in 55 minutes. The cheaper flight cost you time and money.

Do this math for your own itinerary. Add the flight price to the metro fare plus the final taxi from the metro station to your accommodation. Then add the time. For Dongcheng, Xicheng, and Chaoyang hotels, PEK almost always wins. For Fengtai or Tongzhou, Daxing wins. For Haidian, check the metro connections. The Airport Express from PEK goes to Dongzhimen. From Dongzhimen you can transfer to Line 2 or Line 13. That adds a 10-15 minute underground walk. Factor that in.

What the Flight Search Does Not Show You

The Hidden Costs

Flight search engines show you the fare and the departure time. They do not show you that a ¥100 saving on a PKX ticket disappears when your taxi from Caoqiao to the Temple of Heaven costs ¥70. They do not warn you that PKX trains stop at 22:30, and a missed connection means a ¥300 taxi ride through south Beijing at midnight.

Get Your SIM Before You Leave the Terminal

Both airports have good food before security. PEK's Terminal 3 has a decent food court with zhajiangmian and dumplings. PKX has a higher end selection but charges airport prices. Both sell SIM cards for ¥100-200 at the arrivals hall. Setup takes 20-30 minutes with your passport. Do that before you leave the terminal. Outside, you need a Chinese phone number for WiFi verification in hotels and cafes.

Common Questions

Which airport is closer to the Forbidden City?

PEK. The Airport Express to Dongzhimen takes 25 minutes, then a 15 minute taxi or 20 minute metro ride puts you at Tiananmen Square. PKX adds a 20 minute train, a metro transfer, and a taxi leg, totaling 60-80 minutes.

Is PKX really that much more expensive for taxis?

Yes. A taxi from PKX to central Beijing costs ¥200 or more. From PEK the same trip costs ¥100-150. At night, after the metro stops, the PKX taxi can hit ¥300.

Does flight price ever justify choosing PKX over PEK?

Only if you are staying in Fengtai or south Beijing, or if the fare difference is more than ¥150. For a ¥50-80 saving, you lose the difference in taxi costs.

What happens if my PKX flight arrives after 22:30?

The Daxing Airport Express stops running around 22:30. You take a taxi. Expect a 60-90 minute drive to central Beijing and a fare of ¥250-300. Have your hotel address written in Chinese characters for the driver.

Can I use the metro from both airports to reach 798 Art District?

PEK is better. Take the Airport Express to Dongzhimen, transfer to Line 2 to Dongsi Shitiao, then Line 6 to Jintai Lu, then walk or taxi 10 minutes. Total time: about 50 minutes. From PKX, the journey takes 70-80 minutes with two transfers.
